Beyond Busy!!

Obviously, since I haven't posted here in months.

Been considering doing the "open house" style meetings with authors/artists in my home. Oddly enough, someone pointed out that constructive conversation about writing in general or about specific works is incompatible with social situations. Anyone out there agree with that "someone"?

I wholeheartedly disagree.

In my experience, constructive converations about writing and/or specific works is possible in social situations.  Of course, my experience is in newspapers, which may be a whole different ballgame.

Depends on the temprament, I'd say. I've noticed that truly successful writers can detach emotion from their work and have an attitude of making it better or...saleable.

They must be one of those individuals who cant take constructive critisism. I would love to have a group like that around here, I asked around to see if there was any interst in something like that and only got ONE person to say they would go to something like that. My town sucks. Ah well, good luck with yours!! OH and go here to get a very good free book that talkes about starting something like that. http://hollylisle.com/downloads.html#Mugging

I think it depends on two things: 1) if the writers are mature enough to accept criticism, and if the critiques are blunt and powerful with truth with no regard to hurting feelings; 2) and if those in attendance have some sort of connection. For example, someone from the horror genre with literary writers, or a fantasy editor shaking his head at a bunch of poets trying their hand at stories.
